Veneers Q & A

What is a veneer?

A veneer is a thin piece of porcelain custom made to fit over the front surface of a tooth. Veneers are used to improve the appearance of imperfections, including:

  • Smaller than normal teeth
  • Discoloration
  • Chipped or broken teeth
  • Gaps or spaces between teeth
  • Oddly shaped teeth

Patients who are self-conscious of their smile or the way their teeth look can contact the staff of the Dental Center of Lakewood to find out if veneers will work for them.

How are veneers applied?

When you come in for your first visit, your dentist at Dental Center of Lakewood will talk with you about the changes you’d like to see. It’s important to know that veneers will meet your expectations before the process begins.

After a comprehensive examination, photos and impressions of your mouth are taken. The veneers are then sent to the lab where they’re shaped in wax and custom made to fit your mouth.

Once the wax veneers are ready, you’ll come in for a second visit to verify that they fit your teeth properly. Adjustments are made if necessary, then the wax models are sent back to the lab, where temporary veneers are made according to the approved wax mold.

During your final visit, your teeth are prepared by removing a thin layer of enamel from the front surface of your tooth. Then, temporary veneers are applied that match the exact approved wax mold of your teeth. If needed, adjustments can still be made at this stage. Once you’re happy with the temporary veneers, final veneers are ordered from the lab.

As soon as the final veneers are ready, your dentist will once again make sure that they’re a perfect fit before carefully bonding each one in place. With proper care, porcelain veneers will create a beautiful confident smile that can lasts for years.

When are veneers recommended?

If you want to improve your appearance and enhance your smile, veneers are highly recommended. If you have severely discolored teeth, putting a veneer in place can also reduce the need for repeated teeth-whitening procedures.

A recommendation for veneers may also be discussed if the shape or size of your teeth creates an abnormal or unbalanced appearance. The professional staff at Dental Center of Lakewood, encourages residents throughout the Lakewood, Texas, area to visit the facility if they're interested in learning more about veneers, and how they can enhance their smile.
