Since clear aligners are removable, you don’t have to worry about eliminating raw carrots, whole apples, air-popped popcorn, and other crunchy foods from your diet. But what about coffee? Can you drink coffee with Invisalign? This is one of the most asked questions from patients considering this discreet orthodontic treatment. If you’ve been wondering the same thing, then read on!

So, Do You Have to Give Up Coffee with Invisalign?

No, you don’t have to give up coffee with Invisalign! The only “rule” is that you must remove your aligners first – no exceptions. If you don’t, then your once-clear aligners will take on a yellow, brittle look. Plus, the trays can trap the lingering residue against your teeth, increasing your risk of enamel erosion.

Clear Aligners & Coffee: One Important Thing to Keep in Mind

As we touched on in the previous section, the only “rule” regarding Invisalign and coffee is that you have to remove your trays first. That means that you’re free to enjoy whichever type of coffee you’d like and whatever time of day you’d prefer. With that said, patients are encouraged to indulge in this caffeinated beverage with their breakfast, snack, or lunch. If you drink it separately, then it’s harder to meet the 20-22 hour-a-day wear time.

How To: Drink Your Coffee the “Smile-Friendly” Way

Yes, there is a smile-friendly way to drink coffee! To protect your teeth from stains and reduce your chances of enamel erosion, make sure to:

  • Keep sugar and other additives to a minimum
  • Use a straw (consider getting a reusable one!)
  • Rinse your mouth thoroughly with clean water afterward
  • Brush your teeth about 20 minutes after finishing your coffee

In short, although you don’t have to give up coffee during Invisalign, you might need to tweak your routine a bit to stay on-track with your treatment plan and protect your teeth (and trays) from noticeable stains. As always, if you have any questions about life with clear aligners, you can always ask your dentist too!
