Understanding How Dental Insurance Works
When you sign up for a dental insurance plan, you pay a monthly premium, and in exchange, your provider covers part of your treatments whenever you go to the dentist. With most plans, the highest amount of coverage applies to preventive services like checkups and cleanings. Some cover them 100%, so an easy way to maximize your policy is to simply attend your two routine appointments each year. This, in turn, will also lower your risk for more serious dental issues.
What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers
Each insurance provider and plan has its own unique set of benefits, but typically preventive services are mostly or completely covered, which we touched on above. If you develop a cavity or missing teeth, however, dental insurance can still be a big help, as restorative services like crowns and fillings are usually covered 50-70%. Cosmetic treatments are elective procedures, so they don’t receive coverage, and orthodontics often have a lifetime benefit (or set amount of money) set aside for each individual on the plan.
