3 Foods That May Combat Gum Disease

It’s believed that nearly half of adults over 30 in the U.S. have some form of gum disease. Whether it’s in the earlier or advanced stages, this condition can spell trouble for your oral health. You might want to do your part in preventing it, and eating the right foods may be able to do just that. Here are three items that can keep the soft tissues of your mouth in great shape.

1.)  Crunchy Vegetables and Leafy Greens

Vegetables are often a staple of a balanced diet in general, but crunchy ones are especially helpful to smiles. They have plenty of vitamins and nutrients that can keep your immune system strong, but crunchy ones can promote saliva production as well. Carrots, celery, and cucumbers are just some that can help you wash away bacteria that can attack your gums in the first place.

Not only that, but leafy greens, such as kale or spinach, are tasty and full of vitamin C. This is an essential nutrient that reduces inflammation while keeping the soft tissues in your mouth healthy. Not only that, but the fibrous texture can scrub plaque as well.

2.)  Fruits High In Vitamin C

Fruits are often another hallmark of healthy eating, but they are a sweet alternative to sugary items. There are plenty of options, all rich in their own ways. For instance, citrus, like oranges and grapefruits, is full of vitamin C.

You can reap the benefits of the above, but you can also support your immune system! That way, you will have a better chance of fighting off infections, like those in your gums. Berries are another flavorful choice as they have antioxidants, which can reduce the number of bacteria in your mouth.

3.)  Foods Rich in Omega-3s

Omega-3s are helpful in reducing inflammation, which is often a symptom of gum disease. Whether in the early or advanced stages, when it becomes chronic, the soft tissues and nearby structures can become damaged.

You can get plenty of it from fatty fishes (such as mackerel or salmon) or seeds and nuts (like sesame seeds or pistachios. Better yet, you can add the latter to your meals or have them as snacks as a great way to get enough of this nutrient.

Add the foods above to your diet, and you can promote strong and healthy gums. Keep up with your oral hygiene and visits to the dentist to ensure you are doing all you can do to let your smile be in great shape for the long run.
