5 Tips to Get a Good Night’s Sleep with a Toothache

Your oral health can easily be taken for granted. It’s not until a dental issue occurs that you realize how wonderful having a comfortable, happy smile can be! This can be especially true if you have a toothache. While pain in your mouth can be distracting and irritating throughout the day, it can grow even worse at night, making it hard to catch a good night’s sleep. It’s best to schedule an appointment with your emergency dentist as soon as possible so they can treat the underlying cause. In the meantime, here are five tips to help you get enough rest throughout the night while dealing with a toothache.

#1. Elevate Your Head

A toothache can worsen at night since blood begins to rush to your head, causing more throbbing in your mouth. By propping your head on several pillows, you will help prevent excessive pressure from the increased blood flow. With a bit of elevation, you will not only minimize the discomfort of your toothache but improve circulation and reduce swelling.

#2. Clean Your Teeth

It can be tempting to neglect your oral health care routine when your mouth is not feeling up to par. However, the last thing you want to do is leave leftover food debris and other particles in your mouth throughout the night. This places you at increased risk of infection, perhaps causing even more pain! By gently brushing and flossing your teeth before hopping into bed, you will be doing your part to keep your oral health in check despite your toothache.

#3. Take Some Over-the-Counter Pain Medication

One of the best things you can do to help reduce the pain of your toothache is to reduce the inflammation in and around the infected tooth. By taking an over-the-counter pain medication such as ibuprofen, acetaminophen, or aspirin, you will not only dull the discomfort of your toothache (thus helping you get some sleep) but help keep swelling to a minimum.

#4. Avoid Acidic, Hard, or Cold Food and Drinks Before Bed

When you are suffering from a toothache, it’s a good idea to refrain from indulging in certain foods and drinks. By avoiding acidic, hard, or cold snacks and beverages, you will be sure to not aggravate any oral health issues that may be occurring. Opt for soft or warm foods, like soup or applesauce; these will be gentle on your smile and help you get some much-needed rest.

#5. Use a Cold Compress

Do you have an ice pack in your freezer? There is no better time to use it than when you have a toothache! A cold pack will help bring some comfort to your mouth and reduce swelling throughout your face and gums. If it is hard to drift off to sleep due to the extreme temperature, place the cold compress in a clean, soft cloth so you can feel comfortable while you treat your toothache.
